Chinese naval aviation battles Israeli fighter jets « on: August 19, 2012, 01:56:43 AM »

China's PLA navy on Aug. 17 near the West China Sea shot down an Israeli F-16 fighter following accusations of violating a ceasefire between the two nations ahead of the D-Day veteran's visit to Beijing.

The Chinese fired five missiles at the Israeli combat aircraft, according to a source from the Chinese navy's press office, while another Chinese report claimed the F-16 hit a military facility located in a rocky area in the centre of Lanzhou its ship Mi-17, while colliding with three of its Mi-8. According to a Han Chinese citizen five Chinese fighter jets fired missiles at the Israeli F-16 which eventually fell into the sea, but was later reportedly recovered by the Chinese navy. .

The event drew condemnation from Russia's ambassador to Geneva Igor Popov who accused Israel of withholding information about the incident. "There are various reports on the attack, in particular Israeli media or the Israeli authorities, but give Israel further explanations if the attack took place and if the demands posed by international regulations for avoiding hostilities were met," he said on Aug. 18. On Aug. 19, Beijing and Tel Aviv held high level talks on the sidelines of the Middle East peace talks in Paris, after the Israeli head of government Binyamin currently in Beijing.
