Sorry For The Wait; Here’s Three Courses At Once

The wait for new PCIe 4.0 controllers has come to an end and we should start to see some interesting PCIe 4. 0 solutions evolve in the coming weeks. On August 20, Intel – along with a few industry partners – has been finalizing the third-generation Intel chipset for enterprise PCs and servers, which includes three Intel PCIe 3.0 x4 and two PCIe 2.0 x4 controllers not specifically designed for SSD connectivity. The new controllers feature a significant improvement over the first and second-generation Intel controllers, enhancing latency and reducing latencies across the board, the company said today. The new overclocking fully unlocked PCIe 4.0 controllers support PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 3.0 speeds, so any motherboard that specializes in PCIe 2.0 (ASRock All-In-One, Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H, MSI Z87M-G43 and LGA 1150) could be equipped with them.

"The second generation PCIe 3.0 x4 controller was a major step forward for SSDs," Intel executive director Walter Bray said in a prepared statement. "The Amazon Linux initiative drives many of our state-of-the-art Intel SSD solutions today and there is definitely a long roadmap to develop science for PCIe, but we wanted to take an important first step in that direction."

Pending some additional optimizations, the Intel two-phased GPUs appear likely to see PCIe 5.0 support. Intel's current offerings (Skylake-H and Kaby Lake-H) use PCIe 3.0 connectivity, with the Promise Pegasus x2 CPU integrated features in the new Intel PCIe controllers. Those controllers support PCIe 2.0 x8 and x4 x8 lanes, but don't support PCIe 3.0. The company is internally testing PCIe 5.0 now, and is "in advanced discussions with the PCIe Gen 3.0 Foundation," the spokesperson clarified.

The three Intel controllers are now available through certain Intel SSD partner information sites with support for their purchase prices ranging from $259 to $899. (Intel officially lists these pricing on page 4.) With support from trusted partners comes infrastructure and availability, and it's "always a good feeling seeing great progression with our partners," Prince said. All three PCIe controllers have PCI Express firmware, so it doesn't matter how or when the PCIe 3.0 experience is made available to the enthusiast realm; packages will be available to ensure compatibility across every motherboard and hardware platform.
