I am an undergraduate student in English at Vanderbilt University. As part of my long-term project into the collective experiences and relationships of gay men, I are conducting a survey in various LGBT communities. I am well aware of the stigma gay men face and have heard anecdotal stories of someone claiming to have a girlfriend in order to get food stamps—factor in that a gay man living in rural Tennessee is a young minority and, if added to other members of the LGBTQ community/who have not been politically connected, it could very well land you in jail. This is not something that one would not experience. Therefore, my survey has created an intentionally taboo topic for the purposes of answering scientific questions, which has created a strange and fractured relationship between respondents and themselves. My research demonstrates that underlying much of the turmoil of social issues surrounding the acceptance of gay men is fear of not being accepted, and that bringing up such issues essentially serves as a icebreaker for the anxious and lonely.

This survey addresses these topics:

The form is not yet fully functional, of course. If you have any issues at all the wording may need to change to avoid problems. If you do finish the survey, please vote for your preferred answers and submit your answers. Thank you!
