Spooky season has arrived on Red Dead Online with a new Halloween update that brings an array of new features, Rockstar Games has announced.

The online portion of Red Dead Redemption 2 is receiving a horror makeover to mark the holiday period. Players will spend their Halloween in the new shared world, Murdock out in the Dead Center, playing as Cole to take down the "supernatural forces," as he puts it. Playable protagonists include players as either Cole or Salvatore Del Rio, both living in the community. Instead of plain costumes, players can now outfit their favorite characters with some terrifying additions.

Murdock himself saw some life with a resurgence to Halloween this year, like some fictional zombie version of him did in Resident Evil 5. Players are now able to roam around with 'Murdock Mode' by selecting it from the in-game menu. This feature changes Cole over to a spectral version and turns him into a character called "Trauma." The game will maintain all other optimizations that are going to the main game, and he'll act like normal. Protagonist Salvatore has the ability to fight as Himself,, an undead standboy who moves slowly and only has melee attacks, while Dogs, again from the Resident Evil 5 game, will play as players. With their own undead alter-egos, these Villagers can co-operate with players and shore up defenses. During the day, this dynamic will work as a distraction against players trying to steal chickens away from them. Salvatore will also be able to construct vehicles and work their way to the top.

Some of the Halloween activities include including fights with a witch, chasing a pair of ghouls through a haunted castle and more.

Players will get their hands on some special costumes, such as ghosts and characters from the Dead Center and believe they're now more terrifying to their enemies. Murdock asks players to try and solve the mystery of Monsters of the Dead using the previously missing part of his amulet. This will unlock new content and new costumes. Murdock has two turrets near a portal, controllers for controlling tools, a machete, axes and a rifle that can be reclaimed when you die. A level-up to add the new grenades can be obtained by possessing other players.

Minecraft wasn't used in this update, possibly so they could test out new technology on the game engine backend, which has been applicable to other titles before.
