A 21-year-old man was shot on Thursday without warning while cleaning dirt from a gun, police said.

He accidentally shot his friend amid a shootout inside a South Chicago apartment, and the pair were rushed to the hospital, police said.

Robert K. Dockery was charged with eight counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and Officer Christian Brothers was charged with second-degree accidental discharge.

Witnesses said a man, also 21, bought the dirt.

Witnesses told a Tribune reporter he told them West Jeffers job was taking him to Haiti in May and "he really regretted his mistake," the reporter said.

Two siblings, Georgia Staples and Hans Howard, now are charged with burglary of the apartment.

Police said the two told detectives it was their turn to clean the gun during a recent sighting on the second floor.
