Liverpool legend Lenny Henry has called on Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez to stand down following the sacking of Alan Pardew.

A police probe and a number of high-profile supporters have been blamed for precipitating a signing-window crash that has seen Newcastle suffer from domestic turmoil, in-fighting and a season-fated failure to attack Manchester United at St James' Park .

As Pardew was replaced by Alan Pardew on Monday Pardew told a press conference that it was "really not too late" to turn around the Magpies plight in what was his last game as manager.

Yet Henry, one of the most influential figures in British football after his iconic career, said that action should be taken against the disruptive fans who have caused so much anger.

He said: "If they do my feeling is that Rafa Benitez should stand down automatically. If a Del Boy came in and they brought the same behaviour like in my days it would have hit Rafa hard, if they had banned them they still might have faced a problem after three or four years being there but it would have finished Rafa's time.

"You never heard of any dispersal orders, it would have been hits in the picket and that was fine for one game, why would you want that place into eclipse over the mutual respect of one another?"
