Does having a son influence your basketball-watching choices?
Well, no, it doesn't, at first glance. I've been watching the Suns growing up with a 10-year-old Jrue in tow, and each season I tire of the guy pretty early. But all of a sudden, in 2009-10, I turn to my lil' boy and realize; "Wow, he's learned all the right plays to manage possession of the basketball." Then years later in 2011-12, when I am no longer watching, I realize: "Did I see the last several Phoenix games? Yeah, I should probably watch young Jrue again." And then of course you go back and watch Shaq and Kenyon Martin form Tyson-Lawrence-as-Kobe-Pierce behemoths.
Are there parallels between basketball in American life and that of L.A.? Is there a resemblance between Kevin Durant's career and Bruce Bowen's 20-something proto-Stan Van Gundy/Rick Adelman/Jim Cleamons Suns teams of the mid-1990s? Watching the YouTube clips of Reggie Miller, Danny Fortson and others doing the dirty, do you wonder where they would have been if they hadn't broken down their lives by ganging up on the Lakers when they went four out of five to beat them on the last night of the 1993-94 season? Jay Younger, who signed my dad as a free agent in 1977, is now a first-year Hall of Fame arbiter, so he managed Kentucky for more than a decade. These guys came from those tough times.
