Winter is coming, and with it comes a new, dangerous stage in the pandemic.

As the weather grows colder in most parts of the country, people will spend more time indoors, where COVID-19 can more easily spread. But winter may also inspire strategies to reduce the chances of undervaluing information and underusing mental health resources. Texas must address the new threat, and Texas health professionals must make, at the least, sure enough warning signs appear for students and families to articulate concerning emotional struggles so they can be managed and communicated appropriately.

Coming up in next week's newsletter, many open questions are: Are clinicians creating accurate mental health guidelines based on the bigger picture and the situation? Are students provided with the resources and guidance necessary to fully understand emotional situations and to gain the skills needed to navigate them? Are homes and communities providing additional supports for families and students to cope with anxiety? Do alternatives to medication have their place in timely treatment? Insurers such as Small Business No-Negative, ULTA and Cigna are reinvesting heavily now and leaving more and more confusion in states gamely attempting to lower their cost of care to all who they serve. In football, complacency can cost you a game. Do your emotional health best by coming away from the upcoming football season healthy and prepared to excel as educators moving forward.

I believe this will prevail in the end.
