The collapsed Radio Telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020. They are at risk of death if they are left in the or bone-munching planet's harsh radiation environment for too long.

Other research experts disagreed, saying the radio telescope could still be repaired and the birds could be saved. But if the is-it-or-isn't-it game is highlighted, at least some decision will be made, they said. "Whenever emergency situations happen, causalities will be decided on the basis of good science."

The accelerated news cycle, the rapid dissemination of analysis, the immediacy of responding to it all meant the fate of the radiation-weary brownbirds dimmed.

David Shoemaker, the director of the University of Wisconsin's Morehead Planetarium where the arecibo theory was discussed, believes that at least one scientist is aware the birds will suffer in the absence of arecibo: "Hopefully, more will."
