Blizzard Entertainment reportedly sent out surveys to Hearthstone players for insight into a possible battle pass system, according to a Hearthstone fan-made forum.

The new addition would aim to replace the current reward system, which grants gold for completing quests, winning three games in a row, and achievements with a system based on the experience.

"The survey was linked to a survey about the discovery of new cards in the game," lead designer Ben Brode wrote on Reddit Saturday afternoon. "After reading through that, I actually got a huge kick out of it all, as I don't think that I would have guessed it except for the narrow survey. So, I did the survey for fun and figured out how useful it could be."

Blizzard even included a quiz on how to analyze your win/loss mechanics for the first time. It comes with a challenge, do you analyze or not? Brode explained that the matchmaking system works to make sure the data collected is reliable.

"We receive more than 100k hits per day and more than 125K gold per day, easily enough to send out 1000 surveys each day," he said. "That said, we send only the surveys or participant opinions or cheats back to the team."

It's unclear how the survey would be organized and what the modus operandi might be. Brode said the ideas he brought to the table were considered and "not under consideration by the surveyors," so it's impossible to share specifics of his idea.

The Doctor involved does bring up an interesting proposition, however. Most people who try and dissect Hearthstone's card-design process are quick to recommend changing or deleting the aging Wrathguard and Tracking. The latter is somewhat of a holdover, while the former is restrictive in at least one regard. Fog of the Mountain one-drop Volcanic Lumberer usually costs two mana, and Ancient of Lore makes only a single mana, but they're each almost always strictly better suited to certain strengths.

Given how most of these hero cards are built, what criteria would make the battle passes system more flexible? Blizzard has plenty of options, but even so it's impossible to escape the feeling that the team is more subconsciously seeking to shorten formulaic constraints than drastically alter its current layout.

Blizzard formulates new card designs in secret, and answers community questions largely through For the HotS People to help construct balance and card shuffling algorithms. Since Hearthstone is more popular than ever, it's important that the company stay on top of information related to the brewing process, and improving decision making processes as a result.
