I've been lucky enough to have the Pixel 4a in my pocket the last several weeks, and in that time I've developed a pretty good sense for its battery life. I won't make you read on to let you know my thoughts, either.

Hey, have you recovered your Pixel 3 XL?

If I had a day to spare, I'd just grab it off the stand in the boot of my car and do a quick (TNW Style) battery draw test. A surprising number of Google Pixel 3 XL owners seem to have gotten theirs back from carriers who bounced them to backup partners…although for some, that may actually be a bad thing.

Still, why would you need to measure the battery size on the Pixel 3 XL in the first place, exactly? If you're here to write up a check, there's actually some data which gives some useful insight.

Battery performance as measured by Daniel Vettori, spokesperson for Crown Mobile, the Canadian carrier that owns the Titan 3 XL in some of our handsets. "And as you can see, it quickly went yellow and black and back to white," reports Vettori in this AMOLED battery burn test from a Pixel 4S. No telling if older devices treated to Lollipop suffered the same treatment too, but Nexus 6P owners can tell you that it's a real issue.

In terms of slowdowns and plunge times measured by Battery Self Test , a nonprofit organization that runs three battery tests designed to measure how long they'll go before having to be replaced, the Pixel has currently the fastest charging time out of any of the other phones that sit on our table.

However, don't get distracted by these frequent charge tests; these always have slower charging times to varying degrees. The difference is usually minimal, and might be indistinguishable to the average person. Your phone should quickly return to its topped-up state back at about nine percent, even if you run the battery down to 75 percent from full charge.

(Barf! Most cases of devices I'm testing are top-mounted because I keep it at the very top of my bureau.)

How often does my Pixel 3 XL get hot?

Practically non-existent, you say? How do we know?

The answer, as evidenced by Phandroid's Frequently Asked Questions page, depends on your Android version. Chrome's battery test reported a 2715 mAh glass ceramic battery for this flavor of Android. We're unaware of any phone using Moto's Dimension™ case style and measuring a 534 mAh battery.

So what are we to make of the Pixel 2 XL? Maybe it'll go up after Android Oreo becomes available at some point later this year.
