Final Fantasy VII Remake was a big hit for Square Enix

After years of build up, the first part of Final Fantasy VII Remake released earlier this year. While it probably won’t be surprising to learn that the remake was a success given that the original game is lauded as one of the best RPGs ever made, today we’re finding out just how big of a success it is. Moving past the revealed sales figures, Wii U players got to play the full game on November 29th, back when Final Fantasy VII was five years old.

It turns out that 5,161,899 copies (and counting) of the Wii U exclusive have now been sold in North America, 4,429,433 copies (and counting) have been sold in Japan, and 5,894,323 copies (and counting) have been sold worldwide.

According to the official website sales tracker, the full game still sits second places after the original release of the game in their data, with sales of over 2,000,000 copies in over 13 markets of the world. You can see the full list in the table below.

Square Enix Press Release

Final Fantasy VII REMAKE is the year's sales leader worldwide** Greatest spin off in the franchise's 34-year history**

November 29, 2015 – Today, the powerful Final Fantasy VII Remake was released in North America for the first time on the Nintendo Wii U. The game saw a five percent jump in first day sales on the Nintendo Wii U as an up-rezzed version was available internationally from November 28. As with other initial releases at launch, Final Fantasy VII Remake made history as the top game in the 34-year history of Final Fantasy.

In addition to a performance increase from the original Final Fantasy VII, a new twist by Square-Enix has garnered widespread praise. Battle system adjustments customized specifically for the Wii U by Theatrhythm™ were in fact played by 50,500 audiences. The same adjustments, which make it easier than ever to partake in combat with six additional characters, were also implemented for the PlayStation®4 system.

Through the first week, over 2,000,000 copies of the Nintendo Wii U version were sold worldwide combined, compared to 510,000 copies sold in persons of the old Final Fantasy VII and 707,000 Wii U copies overall: a net increase of over 5.1 million copies over the previous XL disc release by Square-Enix in 2012.

Despite the example of brand–hero Final Fantasy VII Remake, Square-Enix will go back into the games business, and that more than ever, will strive for new and different game concepts such as longer X-length adventures (Final Fantasy VIII), games of storytelling and multi-player ("Final Fantasy XV") and a total statement of shared world("Final Fantasy XV").
