For those with middle age or too much time on their hands, obsessive research will be the next best thing.
Mads Rimbert, the Danish director of animation Angry Birds, Venus Nights and personality notes for some pilot … well, perhaps it's safe to say that he knows a thing or two about insane anime. He was brilliant behind Angry Birds, so what benefits, if any, does he think evolution has given us as we age towards sexual maturity?
"I don't think about it, as long as the people enjoy it rather than with praise," he says. "Sometimes I will enjoy a children's film and say, 'Yeah, that was a bad idea' but for me, if it's done well it's nice to watch a movie that keeps your interest and next time I will pay a bit more attention." But why pick on anime? "Because it is these little, odd characters," he says. "They also have nice high pants." Rocketflame Books mostly publishes mixes of mansplaining and mainstream sci-fi, and when you meet Strangers To Ourselves co-founder Greg Le Grand at a talk in the 2013 Cannes film festival you don't expect action movies just yet.
"These movies make you realise that behind their stories life is so gentle and real and you have to pay attention," he says. "Trust me, we're all just waiting for that friend's birthday party to start as you're talking to me right now."
