Google Maps users on iPhone have been left unable to access its trademark Street View feature

A frustrating new bug lurking inside Google Maps on iPhone appears to be prevent some users from accessing one of the turn-by-turn navigation software's best features – Street View. The issue appears to have been introduced in the latest update to the iOS version of Google Maps, v. 8.3.

The issue, broadly highlighted on Twitter by @swjbow, rears its head if you try to search for something in Google Maps on iPhone. You are prompted to download the product, but when the download is completed, the Street View "bubble" is still intact and not opened up to the search and other screen.

The issue has been traced back to an Apple iOS 7 update

To use Google Street View you need to be on iOS 7 exclusively, obviously, and also mostly on a device with Touch ID or the new 3D Touch element at the right-side of the iPhone 5s and later models.

"This update remove [sic] the capability of accessing Street View from the iPhone," @swjbow-und tweeted, noting that the download process "corrupted the user model as well".

Through its revamped app store, Apple resolved the issue of dirty maps within weeks.

Apple said in a later tweet: "We never remove features due to updates…as always, our goal is deliver the finest user experience possible. Safari on [iPhone] is a beautiful, exciting and feature rich browser, and we plan to continue to support it with more updates."

It appears the Street View bug is a one-off technique designed to protect authorised users. It does not appear to be affecting regular users and it encourages them to upgrade to Apple's latest touchscreen Safari as soon as they get it.

Apple used to get weirder access to its maps and mapping data from its customer base. Flex projects that Apple took in $3.1bn from Maps in the year up to 2016, though hundreds of millions of additional dollars in revenue came from its family-friendly services like iOS.

As the solution to the iPhone bug, the company has included a default switch to remove the puzzling feature, mashup goddess Live Swedish mini Sanders side-by-side with some untranslated Russian postcard.
