Brawlhalla, a free alternative to Super Smash Bros, arrives on mobile

Brawlhalla, a platform fighting game often compared to Super Smash Bros., has finally arrived on mobile after spending years on console and PC. The mobile game came out on November 5, alongside free content that simply teaches players how to play the new game.

After Nintendo first made mention in April 2016 of their love of the game and its community, the developer started throwing its fully-authentic customs at willsmash.co. he spent three months building his own custom Marth to smash every day, with incredible results.

Brawlhalla features custom characters that have been "pre-built" specifically for players in competitive play, with a hair-based color palette to arrange their colors or mix your own combinations. To power your custom, you need a special type of energy called "squares," which you can collect across the game to build your character to send opponents flying.

Gone are the days of plain pre-built in-game skins, and all this customizable content culminates in a game where you can glitch your own characters to the point where you effectively turn them into new versions of their old creations.

While I must admit I still like having more information about this feature on my phone than on my TV, I'm well behind my peers here. Just because something is available doesn't automatically mean it's a good feature. The customization gods and my gaming buddy go hand in hand, and while I hope in the future that 3DS smashers and Switch owners are able to enjoy Brawlhalla as well, I cannot say now will they ever be able to have this sort of intimate control over their rivals.

I'm more interested in learning about the game in general than I am in embracing its dedication to accessibility. Nintendo asked developers for their input in the development of the game, but we're left for the moment without any concrete news on future announcements or plans. What do you think? Do you enjoy the game, and what else would you like Nintendo to not hold back when it comes to accessibility?
