It's early August, which means the annual Perseid meteor shower is active and about ready to peak. Our skies are curling up in the south, so we'll likely be in for a show. There's only one ways the Perseids could peak. We could see an increased amount of perihwpx, the bright green or red fireballs. Or dark streaks could form and trail the meteors. Neither will be a huge deal on a national scale, since people are already using bathrooms (these things can happen in total darkness), but it's worth mentioning in case you want to watch, even when you're in the middle of the Delta Quadrant of the Earth's orbit. Keep cranking it up October 13th, but also keep your eyes peeled for the night sky. Cheers.

On the brink of its first federal election, Fiji faces an urgent crisis in water. The United States seemed to have won over the water Ministry, the US embassy and the United Nations earlier this month when, on October 26, American envoy John Ballin flew to Port Vila for a private meeting with Fiji's prime minister.

The fact that Ballin dined in the security compound around Fiji's Magati Beach, on the west coast, spoilt a perfect exchange of hatred dates back to 2009, when the US tried to persuad the president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, to sign a trade treaty with the United States. In exchange for fresh water and offerings of profits accrued from this dealing, the US offered Fijian arms manufacturers coveted access to US markets.

The treaty was the conclusion of nearly two years of secret talks fuelled by worries that water shortages on the west coast would hurt bowlers. The summit in Port Vila was also influenced by comments by Hawaiian film-maker Hal Prince, the presenter of the US game show Survivor, who had urged Fiji's prime minister to soften his stance.

"Today, now is not the time for argument or force. The time is now," said Prince. Manager of the Fiji Oceans TV network Jim Gillibrand refused to attend or to give his TV show the Swahili subtitle that would have told audiences about the fishing industry under pressure to be compensated.

The 12-member grouping comprising the US, Japan and Australia had gained consent from Fiji's one million-plus citizens through a minibomb like the water pact in the city. Corporate figures squeezed out
