A 25-year-old practicing unity activist in Haifa captured the world's attention recently after her mosaic in Jerusalem's Hatikva Cemetery was spray-painted with hate speech last weekend.

Anna Hazan, a name believed to be a tribute to the female SE letter from the campus of New York University, was horrified to learn of the contents of the graffiti.

Telling Hazan: 'There are a lot of things that we are not happy with today. And we are going to hold our feelings and we are going to stay secret and we think that it will stay secret—so will we only try and live our life in obscurity because of this hate that some people have and keep it as a secret.

Hazan said that her written complaints from the past year on the issue of homophobia at Hadassah Hausheng Hospital in Jerusalem focused on the hospital's policies for on-the-job safety. Most affect its employees in matters of health, including the sexual orientation and gender identity, while others include exclusion of LGBT patients.

Despite the waves of story-breaking headlines globally about incidents involving LGBT people in Israel, the language surrounding hate crimes has systematically remained simple — anti-gay, or rather anti-gay-friendly, statements have been featured prominently.

She says that language cannot be justified or condoned, instead saying it's time for a change, and said that her simple mosaic memorial has been deliberately put under the microscope to highlight the hateful nature of this harmful trend.
