At a meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia, with newspapers and radio stations, prominent reporter Thomas Friedman posed an urgent question to Russian President Vladimir Putin: "Would it not be nice, Mr. Putin, if Western leaders stopped condemning Russian sanctions, and started negotiating with President Putin?"

Putin's answer was clear: "That is not our style. And now we are using this question not as an occasion for dialogue, but as an excuse for blackmail."

He speculates Putin, responding to U.S. recognition of Jerusalem on Friday, "is willing to take great risks because at the end of the day
