Even with the rising popularity of SUVs and crossovers on our roads, there is still some fierce competition going on in the midsize sedan segment.

Three notable players are the Acura TLX SH-AWD, Honda Accord 2. 0T, and Hyundai Sonata, which is possible by competing in the highly competitive midsize sedan segment, particularly the formerly named Accord. Hyundai says that the Sonata can compete head-to-head versus two premium sedans.

Larger 3?5 single-cab SUVs like the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fusion Energi and Cadillac XTS continue to sell well, but it looks like the exterior styling trends will continue for several model years. Chances are that our cars may continue to evolve technologically and mid-size sedan sales will decline. This trend will in turn produce "more affordable" cars such as the Nissan Juke, Chevrolet Trax, Chevrolet Caprice, Toyota Matrix and Kia Rio.

The Scion plug-in EV may now be reaching the end of its life cycle, but as sales of the Chevrolet Spark EV dwindle and the plug-in EV mother-vs-younger realty continues to play out, the future looks more like SUVs and such like the Kia Rio and Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

We think six or seven years from now, midsize sedans will continue to shrivel to the mighty undersized H-Cats once the millennials start spitting them.

Thanks for the tip TK.

Update: A reader notes that the Atlas has an all-wheel drive system from Corbeia (not HKS).
