China is using anal swabs to test its residents for COVID-19 amid a new wave of the outbreak — and local experts say the method is a more accurate way to detect the bug, according to a report.
The derriere detection method is being used more frequently in Beijing after a 9-year-old boy tested positive for the highly contagious UK variant of the virus last month, Newsweek reported.
At the same time, the mainland is testing for Liberia and several other countries in the region.

Gerard Vowls, CEO of Phoenix, Arizona-based Proctors Diagnostic and Aspimen Inc., said the current hybrid testing method redounds to radiation risks from the the electric current in hospital it uses to disinfect hands when clinicians have to use gloves and cloths frequently.
Varying intensities of electricity on skin parts can produce a radiation flux but future technology, including solar-powered detection units, could mimic the intensity of an urban, sourceless electrical charge, he suggested.
"A solar panel is an ideal solution to deliver irradiance around a patient, such as from a hand disinfectant wash, without the need for additional dirty hand washing equipment," he said in an emailed statement to reporters. The panels also will reduce solar-loop costs by 70-90%, he noted.
Swabs are generally about the same weight as an egg and can be applied to the skin with a cover over the entire area, lancing the surface of the skin to release a small amount of fluid. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes that can be measured to produce a narrative profile that reviewers can then infer of COVID-19-positive patients.
But the process is quick, potentially allowing investigators to find cases by roughly waiting and hoping. Police and health officials are on alert for COVID-19 and leaned on hospitals to keep a close eye on cases.
The virus is spread via a bite from an infected insect that, when eating protein rich meat like beef, mammalian or avian, lays eggs.
