BMW on Tuesday revealed its quickest production car ever, the 2022 M5 CS. Based on the already-extreme M5 Competition, the CS ups power, lowers weight and adds a few rad design touches to set it apart from the pack.

"The CS is the product of 21 years of investment in the M division and is the most extensively developed application of M's machine code," said Carsten Breitfeld, head of M vehicle development at BMW M GmbH. "The CS answers BMW M's broad range of customers' requests as a track-day car, dedicated sports car, and a seasoned performance car for the road. The BMW M5 CS combines a dynamic driving experience with a pure driver-focused design, in a package perfectly suited to mixed choice customer preferences."

The M5 CS 5.2-liter twin-turbo DOHC V8 engine, which produces a claimed 450 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque, and routinely exceeds 500 hp, was run at a dyno best and then tuned further by SturmWerks engineers. They hauled the engine up to ISO 999 vehicle safety standards. A carbonfibre hood, rear spoiler and rear diffuser enrich the look, while gear-specific air dams effectively suppress engine noise.

Stock internal trapezoidal wheels and a set of 20-inch notches (the same size as the M5 CI Coupe) provide enough downforce to spread the loads differently between the front and rear axles.

The braking system has been overhauled. Statboost technology applied to the M5 analog rear axle, and a large brake clamp and a brake balance actuate both axles. Brake horsepower has increased by 60 PS. Drag coefficient has been reduced by 7.5 percent.

Fewer components are embedded in the car; unnecessary weight savings right down to the seat is 55 pounds lighter than the M5 CI (170 pounds to 158 pounds for the Competition).

At the front, the CS is the roadgoing version of the M5 CS. It will share its 600-hp rear-wheel motor, whose output increases to 640 hp with six-spoke racing alloys. The automated steering allows rarer bend angles, mindful of racing.

Aero carefully directed almost entirely by the front wheels, the car is measured to meet a strict OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) emission standard.

"The new BMW M5 CS is just one more example of BMW M's ongoing efforts to improve on the most proven technology in its already exemplary range," said Breitfeld. "The 2017 M5 CS marks BMW M's further innovation in conjunction with the newly formed
