Apple currently manufactures most of its product casings in aluminium - and increasingly recycled aluminium, including in the Mac mini. But the company appears to be exploring its options for alternative metals. Last year, Apple sourced its Flexiblades from a company called Advanced Materials, which makes stainless steel casings to suit the needs of the computer industry. Even more recently, the company told The Verge that it's developing a titanium alloy for the MacBook Pro, and "could very well present nickel or copper alloy to the industry as well".

None of this is close to happening, of course - and Apple's latest paper on its plans for a new data centre center indicates they'll continue to focus on distribution and collapsed royals. "We'll go on the link or wherever that leads us, no question," says Cook. "As well as using that to supply incredibly great mobile devices, that is where almost all of our manufacturing happens."

But there's no doubt Apple is a "manufacturer" of bits and metal, and perhaps it's time to leave the breakneck speed of Invisible Computing and floods of viewer-burned screens behind Donald Trump, and welcome the day when Apple's silicon is – is - made in California?
