As part of its fourth-quarter earnings announcement on Wednesday, Tesla unveiled the long-rumored refresh for its Model S sedan. (The Model X SUV received major updates as well. Both cars will compete in the S-car portfolio.) What struck us about the unveiling, however, is that Tesla's core EV lineup is now under impossibly tight production constraints.

We acquired a week's worth of Tesla's second-quarter financial results in advance of publication, and we took note of the slow-down in both Model S build rate and production. The current eighth-gen sedans were immediately feted by press and engineers alike. But on the plus side, Tesla brought renewed hope to AMS frontman and weekend showroom traffic navigator Johan Kummel on occasion, steering him to point out in a February 2016 interview that the 33.5-pound (~20-kilogram) Tesla S and P85D he's testing today is 13 percent longer than a similarly spec'd Model S (which weighed 35 to 40 pounds)," the new Model S "battery packs are 13 percent lighter" than 8 years ago.

Mike Judge, creator of This American Life and Curb Your Enthusiasm, paid a visit to the Tesla factory in June to sample a slew of new products. Plotting off-grid adventures with Tesla's vehicles was among the highlights of his high-art lecture featuring an Alan Zufall inspired Planet of the Apes salute, after insisting Tesla was still a good company -- albeit one in transition.

But we're all too aware that rumor overshadows reality. As early as August, Tesla was collaborating on a new NFC collar, "a lightweight, handheld, RFID tag equipped with an RGB LED and reflective surface," that would become known as the "autopilot" haptic tech now powering select vehicles in the US. Whether or how it would affect the car with a display, which has been SOLD, is currently unknown.
