Apple has produced a high-end virtual reality (VR) headset, which is being described as a pricey niche precursor to the augmented reality glasses that the manufacturer may launch later down the line.

Apple has codenamed its VR product 'N301' and it is currently in a late prototype stage.

While this form of VR is not something that comes along all too often, most VR experiences and products are known to work with existing VR headsets like Samsung's Gear VR and Google's Cardboard. It is possible that Apple will slip a similar 'N' in front of a product name, but will it be dubbed 'Niblet-X'?

According to an editorial from Gizmodo, Apple regularly collaborates with other manufacturers to develop hardware and OS in order to reduce potential shortfalls and bring a better user experience.

One of these potential shortfalls is VR, so Apple may well be working on its own VR prototype. In addition to the N301 prototype, Apple has reportedly been working on an iOS VR solution.

In the meantime, anybody planning to purchase a VR headset (like the Gear VR or Google Cardboard) need to be ready to be prepared to buy a new smartphone. VR High-End Headsets
