Indian scientists have indigenously designed and developed a low-cost optical spectrograph that can locate sources of faint light from distant quasars and galaxies, regions around supermassive black-holes around the galaxies, and cosmic explosions.

Pradeep Vyas, professor of astronomy at IISc, came up with the instrument to prove that Indian scientists have the necessary skills and technology to devise such instruments and develop such instruments without any support from the government or the university.

"Let's revert back to science against expertise. Government committees, independent scientific agencies do not see how everyone can be a genius," he says.

FSA has make a pitch to train a large number of scientists in FUP, stage an adequate number of other research projects and if needed, the academy could also play an important role in setting up experimental facilities to carry out various projects, pieces both hardware and software, he said.

Priya Catrak, FUP professor, said: "have excellent potential young scientists so we wish to empower them to work too intensively."
