Southern Florida residents were stunned to see a meteor blazing through the darkness Monday night, with some sharing footage of the spectacle on social media.

Dashcam and security video revealed the quick, bright flash of light as the meteor streaked through the Earth's atmosphere. Meteorologist Paul Wright described the little shooting star as "absolutely wild," and told Fox 13 it was likely the little flying firework left leftover dirt or smoke that was visible. It happened before a 2015 National Meteor Organization shower of 30 meteors appeared at a record-shattering rate. Many meteor sightings are happening during the 2016 "Aspen Nights"—a 16-hour period of peak meteor activity happening every year as Earth passes through the tail end of the annual Leonid meteor shower, which peaks with 80 meteors per hour toward peak activity in early November. Meteor researchers say the Leonids end the current streak of the strongest Leonids meteors seen so far at over 100, and 12 of the 17 major meteor showers will occur during February 2017.

"I don't mean to be egotistical, but to put it succinctly, it was fireworks," nail technician Thomas DeThaey told Channel 7 News. "I've never seen anything like it in my life."
