Mobvoi is starting to sell the TicWatch GTH today, a $79.99 fitness wearable that features sensors for skin temperature and blood oxygen that are typically reserved for more expensive watches. Smith said it's a big difference, believing the TicWatch GTH helps you improve your lifestyle and health without breaking the bank.

"The air is kind of a bad place for me," said Smith, who comes from a family of ski photographers who have used a Polar wrist over the years. "The body is constantly trying to stay cool. And wearing a computer like a piece of clothing — it can't get cold enough without a computer in it."

Smith doesn't think there's a better looking, and more capable type of wearable than Apple Watch, sporting a design we're fairly certain the Newton and Newton Watch will make a comeback. He was particularly excited about the Google Now on Tap features that are coming to iOS 8 on Apple Watch their first release in 2015.

Smith pointed an Apple Watch at his head while speaking about the buy. "Two years ago I would have found running or cycling or exercising at an altitude of 3,000 est 5,000. The iPhone is obviously a far greater more authentic representation of fitness," he said. "It's just a much better, more efficient, 30-day workout plan. And Apple Watch is making this so easy."

According to Smith, the range of amount of time you spend wearing the Apple Watch creates a number of issues that Apple solved with the iPhone. But here's a big one he said many users still don't get: "It takes a really long time to be able to get results that you're doctor told you need. As far as the cost for an Apple Watch [he would say] a month locked in is about $1,500 a month like MyFitnessPal's [free monthly tracking app]."

Add in the quality of nutrition information you get delivered with the Apple Watch, as well as the TicWatch GTH software that's built in Ticwear's Ticwear iZotope podcast application (for use with the iOS voice control so you can speak commands to get quick commands to tweak certain settings), and Smith said he'd be tempted to spend some of the money on a fit coach.

And then there's distribution. I asked if Smith thought the TicWatch Marathon Kit, which includes a watch, wristband, and cap — is a sustainable business, relative to Mobvoi, who's projecting revenue of $400 million in 2014 dollars.

He disagreed. "To me I do not think established brand interests are good investments in the long run, as you really have to
