NBA Free Agency is about to get into the real world. And it's basically time for the co-owners of the Los Angeles Lakers to figure out who they want to just go and spend stupidly for a few more years while the real stars of the sport pay the big bucks.
Because of the way it works right now, the Lakers have three choices hew to their supposedly larger plan without seeing what the free agents do. First, the Lakers bring the perennial All-Star Steve Nash back, and hope that he busts a move and becomes as unplayable as he was in Atlanta. Nash's back ball shots are average anyway, but if he can make meaningful contributions immediately at $22 million, that's a great situation for the Los Angeles Lakers. If Kobe Bryant turns down Los Angeles and goes somewhere else, or neither half sticks around for another year, the NBA landscape is almost immediately turned around. Just because that's an excellent plan, though, doesn't mean Los Angeles will be able to put +25.9 points and +9.5 assists on the board week in and week out. For better or worse, that's about as much as the 2015-16 Lakers can stand.
So from a purely trade speculation perspective rather than looking at all those attributes, do the Lakers have any chance of landing Anthony Davis or
