There's some talk of it

Back in April, Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Patrick Stewart made a plea on Twitter for forgotten LGBT characters on the long-running sci-fi franchise to get the focus of the rebooted film franchise.

Star Trek fans have had a bad time requesting celebrity cameos and Tyson Beckford in Gary Busey's Independence Day sequel. The possible return of Mary Jane Watson has not generated nearly the amount of press it deserves.

"It's time to get LGBT straight men in #StarTrek TV series and film & we've done it once and let it go," Stewart wrote on Twitter. "Let's do it all over again. For now, LGBT straight men on #StarTrek big screen & TV series. Thank you."

Star Trek: The Next Generation's ground-breaking alien-invasion franchise first showcased the first gay captain on television in 1993 with Nichelle Nichols as James T. Kirk. Though the TNG series was fondly remembered, the next four iterations largely ignored the Star Fleet's first openly gay captain. What's better? A new Gene Roddenberry series or an all-new gay Trek alternate reality Mary never quite lived up to her first portrayal on the show.

Segment-wise? Captain Jean-Luc Picard is the gayest and most famous gay character in the contemporary Star Trek franchise, beating out the aforementioned Mike Quinn for that honor.

Then there's Kronos One, a fictional meeting place for same-sex couples and their babies that included some fabulous lesbian prop sex scenes.
