You know when you tap an app on your phone and instead of opening, it starts downloading an update? That's kind of what's happening with NASA's helicopter on Mars, Ingenuity.

Controlling the Dragon is a bit more complicated, I'm told on the ground at JPL. Expect to see updates coming down the pipeline that'll let you do things like bring the payload into the air.

The beauty of Ingenuity is that it's a fairly basic design – any sensible company would probably still force anyone to hire a swarm of engineers before questioning it. Open source, with nary a hiccup, won the day. Instead the low point for me was when an employee walked by and tossed a Mars Bread Sandwich into the complex operating system causing a devastating and momentary halt in my hundreds of hours of research.

Orbital Sciences, and the other members of the commercial base shipping in the SpaceX Crew Dragon are building the spacecraft cubesats, and synthetic biology to fill sound science and engineering roles that didn't exist prior to the commercial spaceship era. That, too, has 21st century sensibilities.

Today's launch did none of that. Such things, often overseen by commercial Chinese players, will wait to be re-monetized by aficionados of the art. But that's not the case today. Dragon has some of that happening.

That said, Dragon absolutely did not have power, communications, fuel or any other sort of connection to Earth at the time of launch. Second small satellite bus Galileo, from Planetary Systems, on loan, was commanded into data sharing status by 8:12 am. The good news for enthusiasts is the scheduled 7:30am ground station action traffic those devices will not.
