As Wilson continues to grapple with public safety issues, the city's police chief said Wednesday his Springfield officers should confiscate stray firearms.

In a letter to Wilson residents, Chief Larry Lamb said his officers have made more than 3,300 calls for service this year. He said those calls have been for a "range of issues such as identity theft, underage drinking, thefts from cars, and threatening behavior toward individuals."

The chief wanted to address the "numerous guns in many hands" issue plaguing the city and suggested the solution was not as easy "as running out and buying them — at least not without proper safeguards."

Lamb said he supported a county ordinance that would require gun owners in Wilson to possess firearms in their homes or vehicles, in a locked container if needed, as well as secure shooting ranges in public places. However, he said only some of the guns surrendered by crimes suspects and personal use must be confiscated. He specifically referenced the state Gov. Bruce Rauner's proposal to dissolve the home confinement requirement, which was included in the state lawmakers' new budget proposal.

Police have received a petition over the police department's own employee gun policy in which officers say they should not be allowed to confiscate guns without first recommending a citizen do the same.

The chief wrote in the letter that he favors the amendment to the officer gun policy and discussed the topic with current and former officers, who repeatedly stated owning guns does not lead to more crime in the community.
