The takedown highlights how U.S. investigators charged in New York that criminals in China rigged the computer system of a U.S. bank in order to steal 1.2 million debit card numbers.
Check Point doesn't believe hackers will be that brazen in the future: The Iron Throne hacker, who made headlines last year for breaking into the bank's system, had his gold badge taken as payment when he left.
"We learned that hackers, through scammers, have had a lot of success using fake screener programs to install malware on target computers," according to a Check Point statement posted late Monday.
"Note that malicious copies of these warnings that masquerade as search results are effective at getting users to open malicious attachments and opt into the potentially unwanted programs."
Two weeks ago, Check Point researchers warned that Gmail users could be at risk if they clicked on the "remove" link contained in notices and links that people may have been lured into by amarayaya.com. The messages often told users that they were bringing content down, to block spam, or because they were ill or other reasons.
Mark Dowd, a security researcher with Check Point, noted via Twitter that "People are so stupid lately, they install an unknown program," and that "It's not rare to see the same page loaded asking the user to agree to Remove Advertisements on their computer."
