The Nintendo Indie World Showcase is a cure for those tired of the same formulaic shooter. This month’s event showed off intriguing ideas that come from different perspectives and backgrounds. While the selection of exciting independent offerings didn't have as much freshness as the lineup of major AAA titles, the breadth of the selection, and the ability to watch games in action, offered something to watch the whole way through. And all games looked gorgeous, sparking hopes that each subsequent poster may give way to more. Here's our highlight reel.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Trailer: Into the Beyond.

There are plenty of incredible games coming out in 2018, one of them possibly being Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Dev/Tran described getting the box and demo for the upcoming game. Released originally on PC, Wii U, and PC, Odyssey is an open-world action game set in Greece. As Syrena, you will return to the 2nd millennium BC representing a video virtual black woman in Egypt. Wearing Egyptian costume, Syrena's deadly fighting style is transformed into a powerful, all-purpose weapon.

The Quest for Echo Trailer.

No spooky voice in the trailer? To Live and Learn is back! The interesting story of the titular quest is told in a tongue-in-cheek way of light hearted comedy of Pushmo triumph over dark armageddon, and the protagonist Aela (yet another subjectively gender-neutral character) is a playable demo. The critical and commercial success of No Spooky Voice (review: 8.8) has left some to believe Nintendo has all the right supply of quality games for all and were only waiting for that one game they have been waiting for. Even though some people almost immediately stated media in silence, David Hunt, the lead developer on No Spooky Voice, astutely put the emphasis on adopting an idea: If an idea can be turned into a game, Nintendo should bring it out.
