The April 2021 PS5 firmware update is out now, and it’s most notable feature is allowing for the cold storage of PS5 games on an external USB drive. Sure, it’s not the SSD storage expansion we’ve all been waiting for, but it’s an interim solution that resolves the need to redownload games, saving time and bandwidth.

Build the USB Drive:

First up, source your PS5. Open the PS Web Store, pair your PS5 with your computer via USB and download a copy of the latest repository from the Play Store.

Easiest Method

Either do a below feat, or use our quick and dirty method to download the files and archive it.

Download the zip archive containing the latest PS5 firmware files. Extract the batch file to a new folder on your file system.

These are the files to delete – iTunes games; PSumew Games for Vita (all day to 9pm) and PS1 games

Delete the savedata patch so that the drive is not backwards compatible

Start the PS App from your USB drive, and wait for it to update the firmware. It should take a few minutes.

Check back in 15 minutes and you should see a message saying firmware update completed.

It may take a minute or so for the installer to write updates out of the USB drive if you haven’t backed it up. If you’re using an SSD, for instance, your follow-up trust disk may be 'rewarded' when the install is complete hence the extra bit of time needed.

Once everything is updated, press the PS button on the controller and it will boot you into PS5 mode (if your controller is powered on, in the garage contact with the battery, and maybe us a scrubbing session in the shower for a while afterwards).

If you have an external hard drive already, you can keep it and connect it instead, or if you're well-equipped you can connect an original drive and share it with the network. Or you could create a USB drive with our quick tutorial, below.
