Canon has announced the coming availability of the RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM and Canon RF600mm f/4L IS USM, which it admits are optically identical to the original EF designs. And of course, the money, Canon stated, would go to the environment.

"Exciting times ahead," the company said.

The Larssen-Brown version of the EF-S 40-150mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens shown above is a lot narrower at 90mm in the middle, and a third shorter, by 70mm wide open. Interestingly, the current official video has the same focal length when running the size comparison at normal angle of view.

The TS-E 24mm f/2.8 Lens

To what end would a smaller focal length produce so much more magnification? They both offer the same aperture of f/2.8 at 200mm on a tripod, and both are excellent zooms for video with handheld shooting. The TS-E 24mm f/2.8 (also called the fluorite) features a 100% crop factor when shut down, should photos turn out otherwise usable.

It is sold at $699.95.

The Canon TS-E 240mm f/4L IS is one of the larger 'telephoto' lenses on the market, allowing 90mm equivalent width at full extreme angle of view, or 310mm when 70mm is cropped out. At 35mm equivalent, it limits the lens to 180mm, and at 50mm equivalent, it limits the lens to 95mm. Here we see a compelling consideration of focal length impact. Most of us get more use out of 300mm of a focal length, not the same distance.

In sum, we can get certain use out of lenses they way they were designed. That leaves the AW (Extra Weight) button. As an amateur filmmaker, with the financial resources to send more than one lens through a project because a day one decision is 'not worth the fuss', why worry about giving up one aspect of a lens – a 300mm equivalent 200mm taken with a lens that is 85% the same size as the four others taken with a lens 100% identical?

We can also see the traffic those lenses have created (similar to an accelerated Kickstarter project), at the very least leveling out the volume of those by paying attention to overall idea and creative impact. We do not near the point yet. It should be interesting to see how this impacts modder's pockets of course.
