Mass Effect: Legendary Edition brings remastered versions of Commander Shepard's adventures to , and on Friday. It's the first time we've had the original trilogy and all its downloadable content in one collection, in 4K Ultra HD at 60 fps. We caught up with Mass Effect: Legendary Edition's director, Mac Walters, to ask what it'll mean to players to finally get to see the stories they no longer have the opportunity to explore since concluding the official trilogy when Mass Effect 3 shipped in 2013?

When questioned about whether the bonus materials would change players' feelings, Walters told Polygon that every story was intended to be seen in-context and as users experienced each. He also stressed that the remastered installment was developed with much critical eye, and hasn't taken liberties with canon. "We were completely hands-off," he said. "Original trilogy media is curated by an amazing organization called the Mass Effect Archive, and only by collectors acquire. It's a collection — we're not going to miss out on anything that their movies don't talk about."

Although the ending of Mass Effect 3 disappointed some fans, so did its beginnings: The game was anticipated to deliver stirring allegorical material. However, others complained that it left that portion of the original trilogy a little undeveloped. And there's been no end to fan attempts to divine what the game's true thrust is: 'Since any further action in the story takes place after the events of Leviathan, the conclusion of the trilogy's trilogy is left open,' one even says.

We'll start to get a better sense of how the story's been received when BioWare announces whether it's pursuing a sequel to the game or not.

Possible sequels and paces of sequels will change depending on how positive its reception is, and whether an at risk EA is willing to invest and try to make other games that people appreciate who buy the this final game.

Our interview covered what things drew gamers to the title. There was a lot of talk about which games pushed fans towards investing the $60 dollars to get the bundle and how attendees embraced it, and it definitely contrasted fully to the whenever it's brought up by those who don't (as happened when Tim Schafer called it a waste of money earlier).
