I've had some pretty wild ideas in my day, but probably none as ill-advised as Tsarina Katarin of Kislev deciding to invade the chaotic, unearlthly realm of the Blood God, Khorne. If you want to survive the daemonic invasion in Total War: Warhammer 3's campaign, though, you don't have much choice.

In Chaos Rising, the campaign takes you to a world pulled completely into turmoil around an ancient red dragon. Hopefully, you're thinking, your forces go all north as they prepare to take on hordes of Chaos daemons, but confusingly you'll get to choose whether you fight them south, north or east.

Either way, Khorne – if immortal, legendary or evil enough – rages under the world's fields, searching its core for a simple soul to feed. It's this disharmonic power that would serve Tyrants in so many campaigns from Couples Checks to Battle for Middle Earth, but in Total War: Warhammer 3 this power can be exacted upon the alliance city of Kislev, which commands three times as many souls.

To make matters worse, if your entourage doesn't co-operate completely, your troops won't last. Left to their own devices 10,000 of these undead horror will seek your blood, erasing your cohorts and provinces in an unholy reek of the dead. With the pick of the world at your disposal, Katarin barbarians and swifter Chaoson spearmen, eh?

Complete Chaos Rising campaign mode

I'm testing the Chaos Rising version of the campaign to prepare a review of it, the first one in the series to come to PC. I can vouch that it's a hugely entertaining tale, with tight controls, potentially far too hard responses and a list of devious actions that make you question your own resolve before every turn.

Total Warhammer's biggest fan, me, has had more enjoyment than you will ever get from Dark Watch's assault on the Cartagena small warship. Almost every action available is a joy to perform at the right time – including 18 quirky innovations for selecting your officers.

Does Khorne's foretold assault on the city fall foul of some age old pact featuring ritual sacrifice? Should I even bother trying to survive? How will I survive Khan Khatun and my ambitious son?

These are questions The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Warhammer 3 may not wrestle as she with your fate. However, both offer scenarios in which you quest for the raw materials of the divine that will see you open portals between the magical realms and have choices on hand over how to lead your people, no matter how desperate their situation.
